Classic car generator repair and rebuilding
Before alternators, cars and trucks charged their batteries with DC generators. D and D Auto Electric still repairs and rebuilds them, for classic Fords and other makes from the 1950s and 1960s. Bring the generator to 10920 W 44th Ave in Wheat Ridge, or call (303) 423-6522 to talk it through first.
Updated

Signs the generator needs work
The voltage regulator and the generator work as a pair. When one has failed, it is worth checking the other.
Generator light stays on
The light should go out once the engine is running above idle.
Battery runs down while driving
The generator isn't putting out enough to keep up with the lights and ignition.
Charging comes and goes
Worn brushes, a dirty commutator or a regulator problem can cause on-and-off charging.
New wiring, still no charge
Generator and voltage regulator wiring is easy to get wrong after a restoration.
Generators that have come across the bench
- A generator out of a 1959 Ford Fairlane. The owner drove an hour each way to have it rebuilt (Jimmy V., Yelp)
- A generator for a 1964½ Mustang that had arrived twice in the wrong configuration, corrected with the right faceplate and fan blades in about two hours (Amber D., Google)
- Generators for other classic cars and trucks, any make
Rebuilt generator out of a 1959 Ford Fairlane. He is the last of his breed. A master at electrical. The gen worked great.

Do you still rebuild car generators?
Yes. Generator repair and rebuilding is part of D&D's regular work, along with starters and alternators.
Can you help me get the wiring right?
Call the shop. Generator and regulator wiring trips up a lot of restorations, and one customer had Doug talk him through a wiring mistake over the phone.
Can I send you a generator from out of state?
D&D works with customers across the US to provide parts. Call (303) 423-6522 before you ship anything.
